Apple TV+: Will Subscription Prices Soon Rise in France?
A Streaming Service Known for Its Simplicity
Apple TV+ has long stood out in the crowded streaming market for one simple reason: a single subscription plan. Unlike Netflix or Disney+, which offer multiple tiers with and without ads, Apple has always relied on a straightforward approach one price, one offer, no hidden complexity.
But has this stability really lasted? Not quite. When the service first launched, it cost just €4.99 per month. In 2021, the price rose to €6.99, and by late 2023 it climbed again to €9.99. Since then, subscribers in France have enjoyed a steady price. However, given recent changes abroad, the question arises: how long can this stability last?
A Price Hike Already Confirmed in the United States
On August 21, 2025, Apple officially raised the monthly cost of Apple TV+ in the United States. The subscription jumped from $9.99 to $12.99. New customers are already paying the higher fee, while existing subscribers will see the increase on their next billing cycle.
What makes this move controversial is the lack of added value. No new features, no exclusive bonus content, no major updates just a higher price for the same service. And since this marks the second price hike in less than two years, it raises a crucial question: could France and the rest of Europe be next?
Why Not Offer a Cheaper Ad-Supported Plan?
One might expect Apple to introduce a more affordable, ad-supported plan, following the footsteps of Netflix and Disney+. Yet, Apple has chosen not to.
This is surprising, especially since several moves hinted at such a possibility: the company hired advertising expert Joseph Cady, and even entered discussions with audience measurement organizations in the UK. Many assumed these steps signaled the launch of a lower-cost, ad-backed option. But as of today, nothing has been announced.
Why the hesitation? It’s possible Apple wants to preserve its premium image. For many, an ad-free experience is part of Apple’s DNA a seamless, distraction-free environment that sets it apart from competitors. Introducing commercials might dilute that brand identity.
A Financial Reality That Cannot Be Ignored
Behind the scenes, Apple TV+ may not be as profitable as its rivals. According to The Information, the platform is reportedly losing around $1 billion every year. Even for a tech giant like Apple, such losses can’t be overlooked forever.
So what does this mean for France and other European markets? While the subscription still costs €9.99 per month, the U.S. price increase could be a warning sign. Much like ripples in water, changes in one market often spread to others. If history is any indication, European subscribers should brace themselves for a potential rise sooner rather than later.
A Reminder: Apple TV+ Within Canal+ Bundles
For French viewers, there is still an alternative. Apple TV+ comes included in the Canal+ bundle at €24.99 per month, which also offers Canal+ Originals, sports channels, and even a pass for European football competitions (Champions League, Europa League). As a bonus, it currently includes beIN Sports for three months.
For some subscribers, this bundle may soften the impact of a standalone Apple TV+ price increase. Still, the looming question remains: will France soon follow the U.S. with higher prices, or will Apple delay the inevitable?
