Google Unveils the Pixel Watch 4: A Smartwatch Aiming to Outshine the Apple Watch

On August 20, 2025, during its highly anticipated Made by Google event, the tech giant introduced more than just the new Pixel 10 smartphones. The spotlight also turned to the Google Pixel Watch 4, a next-generation smartwatch designed to compete directly with the Apple Watch Series 11. With a refreshed design, a powerful Qualcomm processor, and groundbreaking features, Google is making a bold statement in the wearables market.

A Launch Full of Expectations and Surprises

While everyone expected the Pixel 10 lineup  including the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold Google surprised the audience by revealing its latest smartwatch alongside new earbuds. The arrival of the Pixel Watch 4 wasn’t exactly a secret, thanks to months of leaks and speculation. However, the launch still carried an unexpected twist: although preorders start immediately, the watch won’t officially hit stores until October 9, 2025.

This delay mirrors the release strategy of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, giving Google time to build anticipation. But it also raises a question: will users be patient enough to wait, knowing that Apple is preparing its own updates in the same timeframe?

A Revolutionary Display: The Actua 360 Screen

One of the most striking upgrades is the new convex display. Unlike traditional curved glass, the entire screen is rounded, which Google proudly calls the “Actua 360 Display.” Imagine holding a crystal-clear dome on your wrist that’s the visual effect.

The benefits are tangible:

  • 10% larger viewing area
  • 16% slimmer bezels
  • Brightness peaking at 3000 nits, a dramatic leap from the previous 2000 nits

All of this, without increasing the watch case sizes, which remain at 41 mm and 45 mm. For users, this means better readability in direct sunlight, more room for notifications, and a sleeker look without sacrificing comfort.

Designed for Durability and Customization

Google has also rethought the watch’s repairability. Both the screen and the battery are easier to replace, making the Pixel Watch 4 more sustainable compared to many competitors. And despite this modularity, durability hasn’t been compromised: the body is crafted from aluminum, protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2, and certified IP68 for dust and water resistance.

On the software side, the watch runs on WearOS with Material You Expressive, bringing more personalization to the user interface. This allows each owner to tailor the experience, from watch faces to widgets, in ways that reflect their personality.

Smarter Performance with Qualcomm and Gemini AI

Under the hood, the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 processor powers the Pixel Watch 4. This next-gen chip promises faster performance, improved energy efficiency, and stronger AI integration. For example, users gain access to a lightweight version of Google’s Gemini, enabling features like on-device assistance and predictive suggestions.

But perhaps the most eye-catching addition is satellite messaging support  available in the LTE version. In emergency situations, the watch can send distress messages even without a paired smartphone. Picture hiking in a remote mountain range with no network; the Pixel Watch 4 could still send your location to rescuers.

Advanced Health and Fitness Features

Health tracking has also received significant upgrades. Google has refined the haptic motor, thermometer, oximeter (for sleep monitoring), and GPS. Charging is now 25% faster, and the watch offers 30 hours of battery life for the 41 mm model and up to 40 hours for the 45 mm  translating to two or even three days of standard use.

To enrich the fitness experience, more sports modes have been added. And with Gemini AI, Google introduces the AI Health Coach, capable of designing personalized fitness programs based on your habits, activity level, and goals. Imagine a virtual trainer who not only tracks your runs but also suggests recovery exercises and nutrition tips  all from your wrist.

Price and Availability

Pricing begins at €399 for the 41 mm Wi-Fi model. The 45 mm Wi-Fi model costs €449, while the LTE versions add €100 on top. The most expensive option, the 45 mm LTE Pixel Watch 4, is listed at €549.

When compared to Apple, the pricing strategy is aggressive: the Apple Watch Series 11 starts at €449, meaning Google undercuts its rival at the entry-level while offering competitive features at the high end.

✅ In short, the Pixel Watch 4 combines futuristic design, enhanced durability, satellite connectivity, and powerful AI coaching. The big question remains: will these innovations be enough to lure Apple Watch users into Google’s ecosystem?
